Hulman Building

From 1888 to 1969, Hulman and Company, from Terre Haute, Indiana, operated a wholesale grocery business in Mattoon.  Some accounts say their building was built in 1911, others say 1895.  At the time, it was the largest building in town.  It was located at the southwest corner of the Illinois Central Railroad and Charleston Avenue.  On February 15, 1981, fire partially destroyed the building.  It was torn down May 26, 1984.  Today, all that’s left is a warehouse on the far south portion of the Hulman property.  It is pretty much in ruins.  A laundry mat sits at the site of the main facility.
